Design Process: The design process involves more than just developing a business relationship with the architect. Designing a structure that works with your location, your lifestyle, and your dreams and desires takes involvement in the client/architect relationship. Here's an overview of the design development and building process. - Get to know the client – dreams, desires, needs and preferences
- Get to know the site – climate, resources, opportunities and restraints
- Get to know the context – vernacular buildings, planning and building regulations, local materials and builders
- Schematic design and modeling – exploring the solutions that best meet the client’s needs using drawings and models
- Design development – integrating all the materials and systems into a coherent whole
- Modeling and testing – throughout the process to test design ideas
- Finding and selecting local materials, builders and craftspeople
- Construction drawings (blueprints) that really communicate with builders
- Teamwork with the builder – including the builder in the design process as early as possible takes advantage of his/her wealth of building knowledge and avoids surprises during construction
- Client support provided during construction – from design changes to selecting tile and light fixtures, a variety of services can be provided.
