Kelly was presented the 2005 World Habitat Award at the United Nations/UN-HABITAT "World Habitat Day "celebration in Jakarta Indonesia, for her work on the Chinese Straw-Bale Energy Efficient Housing Project. Working with the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA), she spearheaded the introduction of straw-bale construction to China and built over 600 straw-bale houses and three straw-bale schools in five northeastern provinces in a project funded by Kadoorie Foundation of Hong Kong.
Two World Habitat Award winners are selected each year by the Building Social Housing Foundation (BSHF) in recognition of their practical, innovative and sustainable solutions to current housing issues. The Building and Social Housing Foundation is an international organization that promotes sustainable development and innovation in housing through collaborative research and knowledge transfer.

Top Ten Green Architects 2005 Kelly Lerner was named in the "Top 10 Green Architects" by Natural Home and Garden Magazine in the July/August Issue 2005. The purpose of the award Ecological architects partner with nature to design homes that blend with their sites, provide healthy environments, and preserve natural resources.

- Holistic perspective: linking of humans and environment
- Understanding economics of building; keep costs down
- Emphasis on healthy building
